The New PMBOK Map: 7 Domains, 5 Focus Areas, One Page

We covered what changed in the PMBOK 8th Edition. This week, we make it usable — because the fastest way to feel calm about a big guide is to fit it on a single page.

So let’s build your map.

The five Focus Areas (the spine)

These are the phases every project moves through, and they’re back in the 8th Edition:

  1. Initiating — get the project authorized and framed
  2. Planning — decide how you’ll do the work
  3. Executing — do the work
  4. Monitoring & Controlling — keep it on track
  5. Closing — finish cleanly and capture the lessons

If you learn nothing else this week, learn these five in order. They’re the backbone everything else attaches to.

The seven performance domains (the content)

Now the seven domains — but don’t memorize them as a flat list. Group them into four chunks:

  • ⚖️ Governance → the rules of the game (who decides, how issues escalate)
  • 📐 Scope · Schedule · Finance → the classic triple constraint
  • 👥 Stakeholders · Resources → your people
  • 🎲 Risk → wraps around everything else

Say it as a sentence: rules → constraint → people → risk. Four chunks are dramatically easier to hold in your head than seven random words.

The 40 processes (the detail)

Here’s the mental model that makes the whole thing click: the 40 processes live at the intersections of domains and Focus Areas. Picture the grid — Focus Areas across the top, domains down the side. Each process is a cell: this domain, during that phase. You’re not memorizing a list of 40 things floating in space. You’re placing each one on a map you already drew.

Put it on one page

Here’s your assignment this week — 10 minutes, one sheet of paper:

  1. Write the five Focus Areas across the top.
  2. Write the seven domains down the left, grouped in the four chunks.
  3. That grid is the entire 8th Edition structure.

Pin it above your desk. Every time a topic feels overwhelming, find its cell. Overwhelm turns into “oh, that’s just here.”

The 3-step toolkit to make it stick

  1. Recite the spine daily. Five Focus Areas, in order, out loud, once a day. Ten seconds.
  2. Chunk the domains. Rules → constraint → people → risk. Never the flat list.
  3. Quiz with AI. “Pick one of the 7 domains at random. Explain it in 3 sentences, then quiz me with one scenario question.” Run it on your commute.

The guide stops feeling like a wall of text and starts feeling like a spreadsheet. And spreadsheets? We can handle spreadsheets.
